What is the Portugal Golden Visa Program?
The Portuguese Golden Visa Program provides a way for foreign investors wishing to reside in Portugal to obtain a residence permit and Portuguese citizenship. This program was launched by the Portuguese government in 2012 to promote economic development.

To be eligible for a Portuguese Golden Visa the following conditions must be met:
Not be an EU citizen or a citizen of a European country within the European Economic Area (EEA)
Have no criminal record
Complete any of the following requirements:
Invest at least €500,000 in a Portuguese investment fund approved by the Portuguese government
Open a company that creates at least 10 jobs for Portuguese citizens
Invest at least €250,000 in projects related to the preservation of Portuguese culture
Invest at least €500,000 in research and development activities in Portugal
If these requirements are met, a Golden Visa can be applied for through the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate office.

Is it possible to reside permanently in Portugal?
Holders of a Residence Permit can reside permanently in Portugal and the first Residence Visa is usually valid for 4 months. Upon entry, a Residence Permit needs to be obtained from the Portuguese Immigration and Border Services (SEF). Eligibility for a permit depends on individual circumstances and the SEF website can help you to identify what information and documents are required. Initial residence permits are usually valid for one year and must be renewed before expiry in order to remain in Portugal. In some cases, SEF will offer a two-year residence permit after the first renewal. You can apply for Portuguese citizenship after five years of residence in Portugal.
